Everyone's experience is different – I want to express mine. It may not be recognizable to others exactly as I feel it, but hopefully it will resonate with the viewer.
Each new painting usually begins with gesture drawing, and then my reactions to those gestures carry the painting to its end. I don't necessarily know where that end is, so it may "ramble" along in different directions, until I feel like it is at a stopping point. There is now an emphasis on negative space, and intuitive interaction of line and shape.
I have painted landscapes and still life for years, and that has been a wonderful process. But, after reaching a "certain age", I realized that I have been wanting to paint abstractly for a long time and that I had better get at it. Now I am painting for myself, trying to express what is in my brain, whatever that may be.
